Thomas David Moore, Ph.D.,
76, Associate Dean Emeritus and Professor Emeritus of Management,
Culverhouse College of Commerce and Business Administration at The
University of Alabama died at Hospice of West Alabama on Oct. 9, 2009 after a long and courageous battle with angiosarcoma.
Born
July 19, 1933 in D’Lo, Mississippi, T.D. (Tom) Moore was the youngest
child of Laura Emma Clark Moore and Jesse Crawley Moore.
He moved with his family to Gulfport in 1940 and graduated in 1951 from
Gulfport High School where he was a member of the G Club. He attended
the University of Mississippi on an athletic scholarship and was a
member of the track team, M Club, and Alpha Tau Omega fraternity. He
received a degree in business administration in 1955, then began his career as an industrial engineer for Boeing Airplane Company in Seattle, Wash.
He
returned to the University of Mississippi in 1959 where he received an
MBA degree. Following graduation in 1960, he worked as a corporate industrial engineer in Holly Springs, Miss., at Fryling Electric Company, a subsidiary of Erie Resistor Corporation.
He
enrolled as a member of the first class of the Ph.D. program in
Commerce and Business Administration at Ole Miss and received his
degree in 1964 after which he served as Chairman of the Department of
Business Management at Tennessee Technological Institute in Cookeville,
Tenn.
Dr. Moore began his career at The University of Alabama in September 1965 as associate professor in the economics department
of the College of Commerce and Business Administration. He served as
Executive Director of the Alabama Council of Economic Education and was
instrumental in promoting economic education for high school students.
During his tenure, he created and produced two series of educational
television programs for Alabama students. He continued his efforts to
promote economics and business education at the collegiate level as
co-founder of the Alabama chapter of Omicron Delta Epsilon and
president of Beta Gamma Sigma honor societies.
Dr.
Moore served as Executive Director of External Affairs for the College
of Commerce and Business Administration and initiated the development
of a program designed to generate funding for the college from both
private and governmental entities while enhancing the political clout
for the college.
He was instrumental in forming the Board of Visitors and the Commerce
Executives Society, an alumni support group designed to recruit
outstanding students to the Capstone. Additionally, he was vital in the
founding of the Alabama Business Hall of Fame, serving as its Director
from 1973 – 1994.
Dr. Moore was promoted to associate dean of the Culverhouse College of Commerce and the Graduate School of Business in 1975. He directed the renovation of Bidgood Hall, helped establish the chair of real estate, edited the business school’s alumni magazine, and presided over the Board of Visitors as well as the Commerce Executive Society.
He was inducted into the University of Alabama’s Culverhouse College of
Commerce and Business Administration and Manderson Graduate School of
Business Faculty Hall of Fame in May 2009.
He was an active member of First United Methodist Church of Tuscaloosa and, for a number of years, was on the administrative board.
His community involvement included serving as past president of the
Exchange Club of Tuscaloosa, two tenures as president of the Tuscaloosa
Quarterback Club, former Board of Directors member of the Chamber of
Commerce of West Alabama and Indian Hills Country Club.
He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Billie Ruth Armstrong Moore ;
daughter, Ellen Moore Johnson, son-in-law, Raiford C. (Rick) Johnson,
and granddaughter, Rebekah Kathleen Johnson all of Tuscaloosa. He is
also survived by his sister, Elizabeth M. Boudro of DeRitter, La., brother, Harvey J. Moore (Alice) of Kansas City, Mo., and sister-in-law Dolores Moore of Ferndale, Miss.
Dan Black, Americas Director of Campus Recruiting for Ernst & Young, told a group of accounting students that the BAMA Initiative is “a program near and dear to my heart.”
Bettering Access to Majoring in Accounting (BAMA) Initiative is a program funded by Ernst & Young to bring more diversity to accounting education.
Ernest & Young and The Culverhouse School of Accountancy at The University of Alabama have a long and extensive relationship. More than 100 UA graduates are now working at the financial services giant which was named by BusinessWeek as “The Best Place to Launch a Career.”
“UA is a priority school for Ernst & Young,” Black told the audience of the university chapter of the National Association of Black Accountants, BAMA Ambassadors, and Culverhouse faculty and administration.
He said funding the BAMA Initiative is important to E&Y’s efforts “to build a pipeline from the college campus.”
“Ernst & Young has for a long time been one of our major employers and benefactors,” said Dr. Mary Stone, director of the Culverhouse School of Accountancy. “We are pleased to have Dan visit us and underscore the accounting profession’s commitment to diversity.”
“Inclusiveness and diversity is crucial to our success,” Black said. “We need diversity of thought to satisfy our clients.” Black said many of the E&Y’s clients consider diversity when deciding whether to hire the company.
Black said E&Y hired more than 6000 interns and fulltime employees last year from college campuses in North America. “Our hiring goals continue to be robust and the outlook is rosy,” he said.
He urged students to make use of the many resources available to them such as tutors, mentors and teaching assistants, and to get to know E&Y and the opportunities the firm offers.
Black has been with E&Y 15 years and moved from the auditing area to recruiting. According to Collegerecruiter.com, E&Y’s Facebook page is the social media’s first sponsored page used exclusively for recruiting. Forbes lists E&Y No. 9 among U.S. companies that hire the most interns, which this year (?) numbered 1,869.
Although he was raised, educated and now is based in New York City, Black said he is a staunch University of Alabama football fan. His visit included some time at a UA football practice.
University of Alabama graduate students and staff visited the world headquarters of Mattel, Inc. while in Los Angeles for the 2009 National Association of Women MBAs conference. Mattel executives and UA representatives discussed MBA and undergraduate internship opportunities, as well as what it’s like working at Mattel, the producer of toys and brands such as Barbie, Hot Wheels and Fisher-Price, and one of Fortune’s “100 Best Companies to Work For.”
Trevor Spring, Opal Hammer, Hilary Phillips and Oanh Hoang, all first-year MBA students, attended the national conference and career fair Oct. 29 to 31. UA staff accompanying the students included Dr. Denise McManus, associate professor of management information systems and NAWMBA advisor, Connie Chambers, coordinator of alumni and corporate relations for the MBA program, and Linda Johnson, director of employer development and relations for the C&BA satellite office of the Career Center.
“It was a fun environment, just as you would expect from a toy company,” said Linda Johnson, “toys lined the employees’ desks and work stations.”
Mattel welcomed the group on Oct. 30, when employees and their children were given the opportunity to dress up for Halloween. The trip was scheduled exclusively for UA students thanks to Mattel’s network of University alumni. Huey Wilson, vice president of human resources, is a UA graduate from the College of Commerce and Business Administration. He visited the Capstone this past September. Lauren Ambershadian, pictured with the visitors, is an alumnus from the College of Human and Environmental Sciences and works for Mattel as a recruiter and MBA internship coordinator. Other Mattel executives they met with include Patrick Dey, vice president of IT operations, Philip Hodges, director of corporate staffing, and Danielle Walker, senior recruitment associate.

Forty business leaders from within the construction, finance, sales, law, and marketing sectors of the real estate community will comprise the newly formed Leadership Council of The University of Alabama’s Alabama Center for Real Estate (ACRE).
The Leadership Council, with representatives from around the state, held its inaugural meet in Birmingham at the offices of Bradley Arant Boult Cummings, LLC. Julius Weyman, Vice President and Regional Executive of the Federal Reserve Bank of Atlanta, presented an economic overview to the group.
The primary focus of the ACRE Leadership Council is to provide input and oversight for the Alabama Real Estate Confidence Index (ARECI), a quarterly survey now being developed to examine key indicators that influence the real estate industry. By comparing expectations with current conditions on a quarterly basis, the results will provide accurate information on trends for the purpose of forecasting business objectives that pertain to real estate, said Grayson Glaze, executive director for the Alabama Center for Real Estate. Glaze said real estate index will be patterned after the Alabama Business Confidence Index generated by the Center for Business and Economic Research at UA.
The Opportunities Fair spotlights the sales profession and sales related careers through panel discussions and a Career Fair. This event creates connections between UA students companies that hire and develop sales talent. The topics for the panel discussions will focus on the various opportunities that are available to students who want to pursue a career in sales, marketing, and management.
